Motor Insurance FAQs

Common answers regarding auto covers, valuations, and premium calculations in Kenya.

The basic comprehensive premium rate generally ranges from 3.25% to 4.5% of the vehicle's value annually, depending on the car's age, make, and underwriter terms. Additional benefits like Excess Protector (+0.25%) and PVT (+0.25%) are calculated on top, subject to a minimum premium set by underwriters.

An excess is the contribution you pay towards a claim (e.g. 2.5% of vehicle value or a flat fee like KES 15,000). If you purchase an Excess Protector benefit, the insurance company waives this deductible, meaning they pay 100% of the repairs cost (subject to the policy terms).

Yes, for comprehensive covers, underwriters require a valuation report from an authorized valuer (like AA of Kenya, Regent, or Regent Valuers) to confirm the car's state and market value. We issue a temporary cover note for 30 days to let you use the vehicle while arranging the valuation. Valuation is usually free of charge or reimbursed.
