Medical Insurance FAQs

Find answers to chronic covers, copay rules, and age limits in Kenya.

A co-payment is a flat fee (e.g. KES 500 or KES 1,000) that you pay out-of-pocket at the hospital desk for each outpatient visit before consultation. Underwriters use copays at top hospitals (like Aga Khan and Nairobi Hospital) to control premium costs and discourage unnecessary outpatient visits.

Pre-existing and chronic conditions (like hypertension, diabetes, asthma, or cancer) are typically subject to a 12-month waiting period from the policy's start date. Once the waiting period lapses, coverage is issued up to the specified chronic sub-limit within the inpatient limit.

Most health policies allow adults to join between the ages of 18 and 60 or 65. Once you are enrolled, you can renew your cover for life. For senior citizens joining past age 65, we compare specialized senior health products (like Britam Milele or Jubilee Senior Citizens cover) which accept new entrants up to age 75 or 80.
